Swedish representative withdraws from marathon swimming
A Swedish athlete who was scheduled to compete in the marathon swimming event of the 2024 Paris Olympics in the Seine River has withdrawn. The reason is concerns about the water quality.
According to Fox Sports in the United States on the 9th (Korean time), Swedish national swimming team member Victor Johansson announced that he would not participate in the men's 10km marathon swimming event scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM that day. The
reason Johansson withdrew so soon before the start of the competition was the water quality of the Seine River. In an interview with his country's media, Johansson explained, "I withdrew because I felt sick after swimming in the Seine River."
The controversy over the water quality of the Seine River has been ongoing since the organizing committee decided to use the river as the venue for some swimming events. The French government said it invested over 2 trillion won to improve the water quality, but the controversy did not subside.
Rather, the anxiety of the athletes competing in the event increased as training and competitions scheduled for the event were canceled or postponed due to the worsening water quality. There was even a video of an athlete vomiting in the Seine River after a competition.
Johansson claimed, “I am receiving various information as well. What is certain is that there are people who have gotten sick (after swimming in the Seine River).”
Although the causal relationship between the water quality of the Seine River and the athletes’ illnesses has not been revealed, the fact that several athletes have become ill after triathlons had a major impact on Johansson’s decision to withdraw.
